I didn't read the article entirely, but anyway...
I don't think "smartness" has anything to do with it at all, a correlation may exist but it doesn't mean one causes the other. Of course, if someone has few friends they'll tend to spend more time reading, studying, etc, and therefore know more (at least that's what it was like at my high school).
The whole bully thing seemed more of a group mentality - anything not like the group was persecuted, which generally boiled down to being an individual. Then the bullys got laughed at because they're now no-hopers with crap jobs.
I've also seen time and again how the unpopular kids get the most respect of anyone in the school towards the end as people started to mature more.
