According to "American Heritage Directionary":

n.
1) The parasitic larva of a botfly.
2) bots usage: used with a sing. or pl. verb
A disease of mammals, especially cattle and horses, caused by infestation of the stomach or intestines with botfly larvae.
...and:

botfly
n.
Any of various stout, two-winged flies, chiefly of the genera Gasterophilus and Oestrus, having larvae that are parasitic on various animals, especially horses and sheep, and sometimes on humans.
