Default Operations 1942 - 29-04-2004

It's a Half-Life MOD

takes place, as the name suggests, in 1942 (doh! ) and it's a bunch of solo missions for single-player gaming.
It's an interesting concept I think, because it's not a real storyline, but rather independent historical missions that the player has to fullfill. You gotta sneak a lot and use tactics instead of blasting hordes of enemies à la Medal of Honor.

The MOD team seems to focus a lot on the quality
that will change us of these crappy 12-year old made single player mods
For starters the gfx look VERY detailed and VERY convincing

version 2.0 is out

http://www.no1studios.com/1942/

I'm downloading it right now (~60 Mb), will tell you how it looks like in a short while, stay tuned

Thanks! It's been a while since there's been a good Single Player mod

the mod is VERY good.

I've just finished the North Africa campaign and I'm starting on the Bocage one.
The maps are really well-made. I find them more convincing than any other existing WW2 mod - including The Gate. More "real" than MOH:AA too...

I'll post screenshots, stay tuned

OK so here goes a few of them

In fact that's a bit disappointing, cause the missions are very short.

a nice ambience here... I know that for sure, I live in the bocage of Vendée, and it's really resembling - well, apart the wreckage of course
but on our grandfather's photos some places sure look like this

The models are well detailed

...but unfortunately the guy who did them must not have paid much attention to the bones of the model...

it makes them take very strange poses sometimes... I believe it's just a bad placement of the model points... they've not been attributed to the right bone.

The vegetation looks very convincing

it's not like these green walls they call bushes you can see in MOHAA or other WW2 games

And the towns are well rendered too

here it's a metro entrance. The decoration is identical even nowadays... although the town architecture resembles more Nantes than Paris. But it's nevertheless very realistic.

On the other hand, it's a pity they didn't improve the Half-Life grunt AI... you end up with the impression to fight against known enemies. You can even take advantage of its bugs... too bad. The enemy voices are not many either, and they become repetitive quickly.

And most frustrating, the missions are damn short.
One of them is not very credible in places (North Africa), but the others are good.

Overall a good mod. Good quality. But short.
