that's nothing to do with old or new ram. in servers for example you want less errors, therefore you might pay some more money and get the ECC ram to reduce errors in the ram. Normally the non ECC ram should be sufficient. should mix both types though.
if you live inside a nuclear plant, on a atomic bombs test place, in chernobyl inside the concrete mantle or in outer space, you should consider using ECC additional to Pb absorbers, because today's DRAM only store some 100 elektrons per bit, so radioactive radiation might do a lot of harm
