Which kind of ram would be better, a stick of pc3200 with a latency of 3 or a stick of pc2700 with a latency of 2.5? Both are 512mb.

What the heck does ecc and non ecc mean in ram specs? Do two sticks of ram have to have the same ecc to work with eachother?

I don't know, but it sounds like it's a sort of hardware CRC check. Older RAMs had that. Don't know for the recent ones...

don't worry about the ECC (error checking) you have to have that on the ram only if you have an AMD 64 bit... it checks the data coming in and out to make sure the flow of data isn't currupt or something like that

altho it is nice to have........ if you can afford it i would get the ECC cause that means it is Registered which is better

Oh, ok. It won't work at all with a 64 bit?

Oh and uh, what about unbuffered and whatever its opposite is? What exactly is that? What it does i mean not its opposite. Do 2 sticks have to be the same with that spec to work together?

yes i would STRONGLY suggest that if you have ECC and Buffered ram that you should get the same thing and vis versa

that's nothing to do with old or new ram. in servers for example you want less errors, therefore you might pay some more money and get the ECC ram to reduce errors in the ram. Normally the non ECC ram should be sufficient. should mix both types though.

if you live inside a nuclear plant, on a atomic bombs test place, in chernobyl inside the concrete mantle or in outer space, you should consider using ECC additional to Pb absorbers, because today's DRAM only store some 100 elektrons per bit, so radioactive radiation might do a lot of harm
