Visual C++ 2005 Express anyone ?

Hi,

has anyone tried Visual C++ 2005 Express edition on the HL2 SDK yet ?
Does it work ?

Just wanted to make sure before I'll mess up my PC with another dev-environment.

thanks

BU

Errmmmm .... No Sir !!

The post you're referring to deals with whether the Express edition is really free, if you need to register, if M$ is bad etc etc etc.

I would like to know if anybody uses VC++ 2005 Express successfully in building plugins, bots, whatever ... for HL2.

There was the word that HL2 SDK stuff does not compile out of the box when using VC 2005 Express and Valve would have to update the SDK.
Hence my question if this still an issue or if the SDK is VC2005-ready.

Thanks,

You're correct. It does not compile out of the box with Visual Studio C++ 2005 Express.

You either need the full version, or grap the Windows Platform SDK and the DirectX SDK.

Only then, it will work. And only if you have a legal copy of Windows, since MS forces you to use the WGA check.

Btw, i do know the topic is old, but in case anyone wondered. here is the sollution :P

Hey man, thanks for your reply.
It's funny to get an answer almost 2 years after the topic was initially posted, but it's good to see that you people are still around.

Meanwhile, VC Express 2008 is out and I could ask the same question had I not been dropping out of Half-Life related coding activities quite some time ago.
It's kind of sad, but time just does not stand still. Sometimes I'd like to go back to the golden times of 1998-2003 when HL1 and its mods were at their peaks.

VC 2008 is fine, it's very like the 2005 version but with more IDE improvments than compiler changes. You can use it without problem. :)

Re: Visual C++ 2005 Express anyone ?

VS.net 2008 has support for .NET Framework 3.5. As for change in Win32 C++ compiler, it simply dropped support for Windows 9x (which means the binaries compiled with VS.net 2008 won't work under Win9x).

It's a bit stupid that they only changed to not support Win9x but anyway I don't think that many people use that unstable OS. :)
