How are my waypoints? ...And my map, for that matter.
1 Attachment(s)
I've been interested in waypointing maps for some time now, but never really put much effort into it. Now that I have a bunch of maps I'd like to make waypoints for, though, I'm seriously considering getting started. So I figured, what better map to get started on than one of my own creations? Granted, it's not the greatest map, as it's my first and only one, but it proved to be decent practice before I waypoint anything serious.
I'm relatively sure I did a decent job, but I'm sure there are probably areas that need touching up. Anyway, here it is. I'd really appreciate input from anyone. Thanks Note: I had to convert the overview from .tga to .png so that the file would be under 2MB and I could uplaod it as an attachment. If you wish to use the overview, just convert it back to .tga |

I don't want to put you on the spot BKA... but... I still have much to learn and I don't want to judge the waypoints until you have had a chance yourself....
when BKA checks them out... i will check them out:D |
Re: How are my waypoints? ...And map, for that matter.
Just downloaded the ZIP. Hmmm... lemme see... the pwf is pretty small, but I'm gonna test it right now. You excuse me... ;)

Ok, intentional double post to set new time stamp.
Well, TGM... I just had a look at that map and I gotta say it's nothing I've seen before. Absolutely not my cup of tea (I like those boring 'serious' maps), but at least you pulled it off quite nicely and avoided using the most boring HL textures and ugly lighting, like so many other mappers do. :) However, I think the map is not very good to show how how good or bad your WP'ing skills are - it's just too small maybe. What I could see looked pretty good. Tomorrow I may have time to attach some pictures w/ comments and suggestions. So stay tuned... ;) One more thing: If you like waypointing those fun maps like yours, I think you could be a perfect addition to our current PBmm waypointing crew (well, mainly biohazerd and me)... just look at that "requests" thread that was posted today...;) |
Re: How are my waypoints? ...And map, for that matter.
Sounds like a plan! I'll wait until you post some screenshots and suggestions so that I know what I'm doing wrong, and then I think I'll get started on some of the 'fun' maps in the requests thread.
Granted, I also prefer more serious maps, but I'm sure you guys need all the help you can get with your long list of requests. If you think I did a good enough job waypointing my 'fun' map, then I might have just found my waypointing niche. =) I'd be more than happy to help. |
Re: How are my waypoints? ...And map, for that matter.
Wow, that sounds good! =) I think it doesn't take more than 3 or 4 details until you're all set and ready to waypoint those fun maps. The good thing about fun maps is that there's not much messing around with nohostage flags, tactical positions etc. The only thing that can get pretty hard is waypointing all those "special elements" like ladders, lifts, buttons etc. in rats maps, so I would save those maps for later if I were you, and start with some simple aim, ka and fy maps... then you'll slowly grow into the trickier stuff. But all in all, it's not that difficult anyway. It's more a question of how much time and diligence you invest. ;) Pics coming up tomorrow.

Until tomorrow, then. It looks as though I'll be having a busy weekend. =)

Ok, I have attached a ZIP with 4 screenshots and some comments.
In general, your waypoints seem to be very good, but the map is just too small to be a really good example. Bots see each other immediately, which causes them to disregard waypoints and switch to combat behaviour. It also makes tactics somewhat obsolete, which is why the placement of T and CT important WPs in this map is rather useless. I see that you added a whole row of important WPs in the sewers to make bots choose that passage more often. But you see, as soon as they have spotted each other, they give a damn about different passages. All in all, there was nothing really wrong with your waypoints, and what I found were really minor details, no serious bugs at all. I'd really like to see how you waypoint a "serious" map. How you fill spaces, how you waypoint doorways, how and where you set camp WPs and strategically important WPs, how you make jumps, how you distribute nohostage flags or bomb target WPs etc... so if you find any reasonably sized, bot-compatible custom map that hasn't been waypointed so far - why not cs_estate, cs_thunder or de_rotterdam? ;) |
Re: How are my waypoints? ...And map, for that matter.
It's good too see I didn't do too badly. As far as waypointing a more serious map, I've been considering doing de_rotterdam2. I don't know if you've ever played it, but it's almost identical to de_rotterdam, just a bit smaller and with a few modifications. It was also made by Rob Smolders, the same guy who made the original de_rotterdam, so it's not like it's some cheap remake. :P
I already have waypoints made by TAZ for both de_rotterdam and cs_thunder, and waypoints for cs_estate by SoUlFaThEr, so I figure de_rotterdam2 takes priority, since the waypoints for it are pretty crappy. After I finish them, I'll see if you approve and then I'll get started on some of the requests. :) Well, off to work. |
Re: How are my waypoints? ...And map, for that matter.
I reckon there's not much left to say. Hehe, this way I'll get to know de_rotterdam2, too. :)
