Errors connecting to Steam

Hi All,
Out of 4 friends who have converted to steam from 1.5 CS one has bad connection/fluctuating ping making the game unplayable.

The other has bad connection. He can log on to the game sometimes as a spectator then gets dropped when selecting a team.

What is it with Steam?

Is this an isolated occurrence or do you guys here of this?

What is the remedy?

We all had reliable systems with CS 1.5.

Hunt.

Oh... well, I'm really not the most neutral person to ask, and probably Nova will have an entirely different opinion. But from what I have heard, bad and/or fluctuating pings are no rare and isolated cases. Being unable to connect to Steam etc., well... I won't comment this, because I solved the Steam-related problems I had in a very... ummm... *cough* particular way. :D I think I remember that someone said the ping problem was really a Steam-related one - if this is correct, then the solution will be to wait for the next Steam update and maybe pray a little, if you're religious. ;)
If there is anything else you can do (assuming that your netsettings are ok), I don't know about it, sorry.
However, I'm sure Nova will see this thread soon, and since he's probably the guy with the best Steam knowledge here, he might have more information for you. Good luck anyway...

Well thanks for the credit T Wrecks. But ping related issues are most likely either connection or computer fault ? I was having the same ping spiking thingy, and for me it was due to Norton shitty antivirus. You wouldnt happen to have that proggie ?

Seb

One of two does have Norton, I'm asking what the other guy has.
I suppose a quick turning off of antivus stuff is the test there.
Any other tips?

Run Steam with the minimum of programs and processes running. If it aint better, then Steam is crap.

Note that my opinion on this matter is already made - but who cares ? :D

That's of course true, and it's also true that disabling any unnecessary background processes etc. can only help. I just assumed that he had had ok or at least not so bad and shaky pings before he updated to Steam, and that this update had been the only major change. I think I remember having read how some guys complained that although they didn't change anything relevant in their system, their pings had gotten worse. But who knows...

The other guy with fluctuating pings has just said:-
>I have AVG and Zonealarm.
>I have tried running it without them and it didn't make any >difference.
I make you want to go back to 1.5 and use Fusion.

Yes these two users had the same system using 1.5 and had no problems until they changed to Steam.

Unfortunately thinking that the two systems should not be on the same PC they remove 1.5. This is a shame because they could have done a test, alternately firing up steam then 1.5 to prove it.
