Minimum standards for Bot Author designation
 

Recently there's been some requests for entry onto Bots United by new bot authors.

This is great news, as we all want to see more bot authors in here, escpecially those who work on platforms other than Half-Life since we have so many already :)

To help the effort along, I propose that we discuss and agree on set of minimum standards that a new aspiring bot author has to meet in order to be considered for entry as a "Bot Author" in the eyes of the Bots United membership.

For example, if someone takes an existing open source bot, such as JoeBot or POD 2.6, then adds a few lines of code to it, in my view that is not an entry worthy of consideration. Also, is the person doing the bot programming knows very little about C++ (or whatever language is being used), again that person should not be considered for entry, since he/she could not possibly of built anything significant on his/her own.

There may be other minimum standards, such as "longevity". If a new bot just hit the scene, but dies after two weeks, we've wasted a lot of time on that person - this has already happend once before.

Here are some crazy ideas to get the debate raging on ....

We could do something like allow members to vote on who should be allowed in or not. Let popularity decide for us rathe rthan technical merit.

Can we kick people out? Yes, and we have already done so. But what criteria does one have to meet in order to be considered for removal?

What about "bot related" authors (such as myself with my bot manager)? Obviously I'd like to see addons that work with existing bots become part of the community. What do you guys have to say about it, and what should be considered or not?

i dont think we.. the members should have much to say about it.. votes usually screw things up.. you should welcome comments maybe.. but decide you and others in the council must,..

i think that last part sounded a bit like yoda,,

about addons. same.. up to you.. all cases is not the same.. and all should be taken up for consideration..

my thoughts and i believe in what i just said.. except the yoda thing.. ;)

One criteria I always find best worth is to wheter or not the person is showing Devotion.=)

I sorta agree with TruB, that it's the role of the Council to decide who will or will not be allowed in. What if a whole legion of llamahs suddently decided to register at Bots United and started advertising for a llamah of theirs ?

Definitely solutions must be kept in regard of their technical merit and only it, else it's a betrayal.

I believe removal should occur on a basis of non-activity, for example:
- if a member hasn't updated, nor personally given support, for his "product", nor contributed somehow to Bots United for let's say 6 months, removal should be considered by the Council.

For the last part, about the 3rd party addons to existing bots, the difficulty may come from determining what is an addon worth of consideration and what is not. Your bot manager is a big thing supporting many bots and having a lot of features, hence it certainly deserves as much attention as any bot. But I'm not sure the guy who writes only a little AMX plugin to alter one little functionality of a bot really needs a forum and a website here.

I totally affiliate to TruB and PMB.

mEAn mod is a really cool thing and hopefully someday available for linux too.

My little AMX scripts don't compare to anything you do! I do them for my personal enjoyment and if others like them I'm happy too ;). But there is really no need for an plugin forum etc. as this is already available at amxmod.net (and amxmod.org).

Well, there goes my possible application, we will see later on perhaps.
Afterwards, I'll think about it, I'll just remain in the shadows in the corner over there and ask a few questions every now and then.
