M$ "fdisk" ate up all my code and downloaded stuff!!!

My HD is previously divided to 5 partitions:
1 - Linux swap
2 - Linux ext2 (have GNU/Linux installed)
3 - Fat32 (have Windows 98 first edition installed)
4 - Extended
(1) - Fat32
(2) - Fat32

okay this is what I have done today:

I deleted the 4(1) with M$ Fdisk, then created 3 partitions in the extended partition.

after reboot, I deleted the 2nd partition in the 3 partitions I've just created. then reboot again. (Note: I do so because this part of HD has developed bad clusters)

Now the problem happened. *ALL* the contents in the original 4(2) partition which I haven't touched at all are gone!!! If I mount it in GNU/Linux it just said "can't find valid FAT entry", and if I click the icon in Windows it let me format the partition. And that partition contains tons of stuff I've downloaded and all of my source code. :(

Do you know any way to fix it ? Thanks.

P.S., I should have used the cfdisk or GNU parted to do this job as I already have GNU/Linux installed. :)

one good reason why FAT32 sucks... a lot... i am not sure what to do... try getting some recover programs or find someone who knows DOS really well to see if they can recover anything thing

When you do this thinks with you computer you must backup your data.
I think that you can fix the problem with startup diskettes of Partition Magic and convert your hard disk partitions.
Btw you have all your source codes open and uploaded in to the INTERNET.
You can easy download it again :).

I don't think fdisk caused the problem, to me it looks much more like some dust has moved to the wrong spot on your hard disk.

When a hard disk starts to lose sectors, it's HIGH TIME to pray Baah-khup and move the data to another safe disk. Bad sectors are caused because at some point a disk head went in contact with the surface (which normally should never happen, but because of dilatation and aging eventually it does), creating some dust which then spreads like a plague. Everytime your disk starts spinning, the dust rolls onto the surface and lands elsewhere. I tell you, it's a plague. Nothing to save. Your disk is lost, muthafuckin' lost. Back it up man, hurry. I've learned it the hard way.

i love software that says they can clean up bad sectors.... assholes....and people complain when a hard drive goes south... think about it... the thing spins 7200 RPM (could be 5200 to 15000) reading and writing 24/7... not just that the head of the arm is like 0.000001 Microns away from the surface (like 0.00000000000000000001 inches) of the actaul disk... if you ask me it is amazing... just like ATM's.. people complain when they have to withdrawl money from another bank cause it cost like 3 bucks if it isn't your ATM bank... i mean honestly who can complain.. you stick a peice of plastic in a machine and it gives you money........ people can complain about anything

bio, do you really think people care how a hd works? they see this:

a box, it should get information on it, and not lose it somehow.
the price

they buy it (or, even when they don't buy a hd seperated they just expect the darn thing to work).

When a computer does odd, they don't think the HD is broken, but the whole thing is broken. People are odd ;)

besides that, do i need to care how my car works for example? I Buy it, it should work, when its broken, i should get it somewhere to fix it. Thats how simple i think about it, and how people think about it (generally spoken). :)

So, yes, its a miracle it works. But no, people don't care ;)

I hear that it works by all of the air underneath it keeping it from hitting the surface.

Anyway, I've heard that back in the day, hard disk heads did not have a spring on them. You had to park the head. If you bumped the computer at all, and the head wasn't parked, you would get a head crash. I've heard that people acted like it was a nuke. DON'T MOVE!!!

My old HD, a MAXTOR w/ 40GB and 5200 rpm, survived several years of usage (not 24/7, I actually CARE about the health of the electrical system of my country, thank you very much :D)... I don't remember when I installed it, but it was when the 1st Harry Potter game (hey! I was young...er) came out... Since then, I never had to worry about it... Now, I've bought myself a 120GB 7200rpm (also MAXTOR, I trust their product now...), and my previous HD is in my father's computer, which had a 8GB HD!!! I still don't know how he ran Win XP in that... ???:(

well actually those M$ stuff is quite buggy - and the most important drawback is they don't let anyone else fix them up :D

just try "format d:/q/u" and see what happened to your drive C (I assume your drive D is a logical drive). Don't forget backup your data in both C and D first.
