How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

Currently all the users of this forum have the user title "member" (except the mods). Do you think it would be a good idea to have a sort of scale, that would help recognize regulars and newcomers ? (like the military grade system on Nuclearbox for example). I don't think it would incitate people to spam, since spam is already a clause in the FBRC and we just need to space the different grades by a sufficient value to discourage spamming attempts...

Of course the user titles should not be deprecative at all (i.e, no such thing as "n00b" or "l33t"), it's just to help us recognize the people who contribute the most to Bots United...

This system would not apply to Council members and moderators, goes without saying :)

What do you think ?

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I like the idea, but I don't like to encourage useless replies, like MANY that I have seen on NB. Not sure what to recommend here.

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I like the idea too, but Austin has a good point.

Can a ladder function be custom made?

Pierre-Marie Baty 26-01-2004 07:01

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

Sure.
We can set the custom titles and the number of posts required for them.
Austin has a good point indeed, I am "rather" pro, but I understand completely the inner downside of this idea.

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

another problem is that most posts are from council members, or super moderators or ... so IMO also council members and moderators should have this custom title

TruB 26-01-2004 09:19

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

we could have like the bots represent that ranks..

3000 posts .. realbot ;)
500 ..podbot
200 ..joebot

actually thats kinda boring.. but i think the ranks should be alot and easely understood.. like nOOb is great as beginner..

headshooter/camper/CT/T might be some time later..

however.. i think n00b 1-10 since theres alot of ppl who dont post more then that before they leave. 20-3/40 regular.. up to alot like 2000 posts or even more. like you pmb you already got 700 posts.. what do you got in 2 years time.. if you are still here and the community exists that is

what if you have an dynamic ranking.. if the post count is really high / member time. you get the rank spammer..

over and out..

stefanhendriks 26-01-2004 10:06

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

omg, then i will be a spammer? :) I saw a few days back i have 8 posts per day at avarage. Sometimes i post way more, sometimes i don't post at all...

Although i like the 'post/rank' idea, there is that downside to the replies. Perhaps we can count 'informative posts' (lets say, posts > 100 words orso) for ranking only? (if at all possible on these boards)

TruB 26-01-2004 10:14

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

or 50 atlest.. i dont type alot.. and i dont spam and talk that much bull..

also.. if it is word dependet ppl will quote all the time and try to quote ppl that use alot of words.. and then they get quoted and so and so on... hell is lose and bots die of sadness.. ive to get back to work..

stefanhendriks 26-01-2004 10:32

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

lol, thats only when people KNOW how they get ranked. I bet not everybody reads this how to get ranked... yet there is no decision on it. We simply introduce a ranking system and people should not know how to get ranked, you just get ranked as you behave and not the opposite!

Pierre-Marie Baty 26-01-2004 10:59

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I'm against the "bot style" classification... would it mean that RealBot are better than HPB_bot or PoXBot is better than JoeBot which is better than [insert your favourite bot name here] ?

I'm also against using such words as "n00b" which may sound like an insult and are usually a call for scorning for these people. The user titles should stay informative, but neutral.

I'm too lazy to propose a scheme but if you want to please do :)

TruB 26-01-2004 13:50

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

since n00b could be an insult.. well then i cant propose one.. n00b is my best..
if somebody could get some cool cs sayings.. or DoD too maybe.. not n00b but anything else.. then could someone just make a list of thatī..

like:
sniper
rifleman
'nader
team leader
camper (insult?)
SAS
TKer (insult?)

maybe another system.. i dont mind the insults.. its just ranks..

stefanhendriks 26-01-2004 14:16

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

Some titles (from beginner till l33t guy)

1. One of many
2. Visitor
3. Frequent Visitor
4. Member
5. Busy Member
6. Walking library

... i ran out of ideas now :)

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

allthough i write a lot (too much allready?) i dont think a rank system woud be good (this leads to spamming). i would suggest a soft vote system with only few possibilities, e.g.
if someone helps many people others will also notice that, and they should then also be able to influence the helpers "rank".
an extra could be some temporary titles like "helper of the month" or "book of the year" , "summers hot lips"... which are shown only for that time but also boost that rank. this for each forum and one for all. at this point mods (right now there are enough) could also interact to filter and encourage certain behaviour.

just my 2 cents

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

wow this is getting complicated...
I'm not sure it's a good idea after all... actually I don't have any opinion anymore... o_O

so I'll let it for you guys to debate :)

stefanhendriks 26-01-2004 16:21

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I suggest to drop an automatic ranking system as it can be abused. I know admins can change people ranks, so when they earn it, they might get a rank. If not, then i don't think people should be just staring to much at their 'rank', its still a name. Heck, i don't even look at it.

im so glad it got this complicated.
this is my favorite thread right now.

perhaps you could base the ranking on registration date...

rank = startDate / activity;

thank you for letting me share.

LOL @ botmeister's!!! :D

Unfortunately the forum software won't allow the ranks to be based on anything but the post counts.... and I think we need more ranks... no less than 10, I'd say :)

14. Homo sapiens sapiensis who sapiens there are things he does not sapiensis and who sapiens there are unsapienable things too, which means there are some things the homo sapiens does not sapiensis
15. Donald Rumsfeld

j/k :D

botmeister 28-01-2004 08:37

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

1. Mitochondria
2. Unicellular organism

:

15. Donald Rumsfeld

since we're now going backwards (deevolution?) I suggest

16. Dubya Bush

:D

Pierre-Marie Baty 28-01-2004 08:42

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

well, wasn't Donald Rumsfeld the author of that meaningless (and long) diatribe "reports that say something hasn't happened are always interesting to me because as we know there are things we know we know, there are also things we know we don't know that is to say we know there are things we know unknown [...]" about the WMDs in Iraq ?

I hope I'm not mistaken :)

botmeister 28-01-2004 09:27

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

Yes, but Dubya appointed Donald Doublespeak as his defense secretary. Would that move not put him one notch higher on the deevolution scale? :)

hahaha it's a funny thread, after all...

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I have that on my forums. It's quite good. But it encourages people to spam to get up higher.

You could just have 'levels'

I.e. 1 post - level 1
5 posts - level 2
25 posts - level 3

and so on. But that can be a bit boring. But it is useful if you have smething to theme it on.

TruB 28-01-2004 17:20

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

reminds me of warcrafts3 heroes.. level 9..
it encourage ppl to spam yes.. but usually just a small group do that.. and also. .most of them get tired of it after awhile..

botmeister 28-01-2004 23:25

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

Perhaps we should just drop the whole idea. The problem is that a function based only on posts which, will include all the totally useless posts (like a few of the above :) ), may encourage some people to spam.

My only suggestion, which it seems is not possible, is to base rank only on number of days since registering.

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

doesnt seem like it would be that difficult to modify the php.

of course, some people say im a little too optimistic. :)

botman 29-01-2004 00:13

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

A title shouldn't really be necessary if you can see what someone's post count is. A low post count means they haven't been here long or don't post very often. A high post count means they have been here a long time or like to spam the forum.

Having titles just encourages people to keep posting useless crap so they can "upgrade" to a higher title.

IMHO titles aren't needed.

Okay, okay, it was a bad idea... (although a funny one ;))

stefanhendriks 29-01-2004 09:06

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

The post amount does not actually say how active a user has been in the whole time frame.

This would mean when a poster spams a lot, the post count will be extremely high but that would not mean its such a real active (in the words of "helpfull") user as we want it to.

Perhaps the posts-per-day ratio can show you the activity better. (like shown on User CP).

hmm, to be somehow accurate, one would need something like the "Google-dance" i.e. cross references and number of subsequent visits are more important. so the event of reading it is important not writing it.
in the end it's better to let people find out who helps wnd who not ;-)

Cheers

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

I'll tell you what would be a good thing:

This is something that is going to come on with the newest version of phpBB, but you will probably be able to get it as a VB hack:

A Karma level - other people rate your posts, and that will make the bar next to your name go up or down. So people who spam have a negative bar, and people who post useful stuff have a good bar.

Now that's really what you need.

Pierre-Marie Baty 30-01-2004 10:50

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

There is a "reputation system" in vBulletin that quite resembles what you are talking about. Although I personally greatly prefer the term "Karma level" :D
It could be turned on, eventually.
However I'm starting to wonder if that whole idea of "ranking people" would not turn to be a sort of discriminative tool.

TruB 30-01-2004 14:36

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

i think the system works well at other communities.. like i said before.. its always ppl with no life who like to spam.. but with some well pointed warnings of spam and active mods.. well then its shouldnt be prob.. im for the ranking. if that wasnt abvios.. try it for awhile if it does not work.. well then take it away..

btw .. have large steps between the higher ranks.. just a tip.. and small steps between the lower ones..

botmeister 30-01-2004 20:35

Re: How about a "ladder" of custom user titles ?

We should first ask ourselves what purpose does a rank serve and how will it make Bots United a better community.
