These Cs:s Bots, why?
Why are they so heavy on the processor, My intel 2.46GHz can barely cope with 7 bots.
I wonder if valve would just use their cs bot and import it to HL2DM. Of course it would'nt be a simple import, but my point is what processor do you need to have it run stable with at least 8 player (7 bots + player on listenserver) And I would like to see which preforms better for this kind of application/game. So far I have seen intel 2.66 522fsb handle them okay. But I want to take into account limiting factors such as configeration of system and components. |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
Heyyo,
Yeah, their massive cpu hogs eh? Either sloppy coding, or it does a heckova lot of checks... I dunno how difficult it would be. If you type in the console "nav_generate" or any nav command, it does the stuff from the cssbot.. so it could be secretly planned or just a small bug cause in order to run HL2dm you need both the gcf's for hl2 and css. |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
i bet the nav_generate thing is not even CSS specific... it looks to me as if it was built in because of the HL2 AI ;)

Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
I've found that me compy normally blazes my bot server, but I occasionally get his with major lag. Very frusterating, pauses for 3 seconds, when it comes back I'm dead.

Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
It happens semmingly at random times, I've not noticed what could be causing it. My ping is always fine, it just 'hangs'. This is the only game that does this to me.
I've never bothered to look into why it does this, as the main thing I did with Counter Strike was play over LANs, but thanks to Steam I can't do that anymore. |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
maybe your pc is loading stuff off your hdd, maybe at this time the hdd is in standby, hence the hang. Or you could have ervil spyware lurking which doubt since that would affect other games.

Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
nav_generate is used when creating a nav file from scratch in conjunction with nav_set_walkable_area
I've got a pretty good list here: http://www.turtlerockstudios.com/for...opic.php?t=610 It is in need of an update however... |

Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
I get slow down when action heats up and maybe a delay when the round changes when there is quite a bit of action.
Have you tried running around without the bots in the game or just one bot. What processor are you using since it could be that it is runnning quite high in usage terms. Does anyone know the specs of the large servers running cs with bots are? |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
Yeah. More checks to be done by bots during gameplay due to the update, can't wait to see how much this absorbs my cpu.
Course I may be here a long time with my 56k connection. Joy. So someone else tell is it worth downloading all of it now or slowly get it piece by piece, currently at 96%. |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
I've not had any bot problems with my dedicated servers (For clan practices), or my local machine, CPU usage in general does increase when you being a server (either lan server, or internet server), bots have to decide where to go, what to do, evaluate possible combat scenarios, 'Listen' for footsteps and gunshots etc..
If there is (for example) and intense firefight going off somewhere on the other side of the map, the CPU usage will be higher, (Calculating shot vectors etc), even though you can't see it, it's still happening. But i've never really had a problem with it. The SDK was recently updated with a bot 'Template' file, which would allow you to create bots in other HL mods.. maybe you should look into this as well as the plugin SDK, and make a HL2:DM plugin which includes bots. -- Just an idea :) |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
the server plugin example in the SDK already includes a basic bot plugin framework...
|
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
Heyyo,
Well, from what I've seen in another thread the template can already be compiled n' used in HL2DM. I saw that Stefan was tinkerin' around with it.. and he did say he wanted to code a bot for HL2DM than CSS cause HL2DM's more unique... but I guess only time will tell what happens in the bot community. ;) |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
I think valve should be upping the recommended specs for half life 2 and cs:s
since my 2.4ghz pentium 4 can't cope very well with 7 bots, and my 2.9ghz pentium isn't too pleased either. I fuond it works well on a 3.8ghz lga775 pentium but not every one else owns one of those. :/ |
Re: These Cs:s Bots, why?
Even tho its not popular to do, turning down the GFX settings can help a lot too. CS:S on Uber-LEET GFX settings is hard enough on your computer, without having the added overhead of 8+ CPU intensive bots running.
I play on a modest GFX setting, and play with 10 bots with no slowdowns at all. |
