wiki change?

I have never been fond of our current wiki; it doesn't look nice, it doesn't feel nice either (serif fonts, pages too large, impractical editor), the syntax is different from other wikis and although I've never tried yet I know it's a pain to reskin.

KoraX proposed to use MediaWiki: it's the wiki engine for http://www.wikipedia.org
It has a lot of features, side bar on the left, comfort of use, nice font, automatic page organization, generation of printable pages, edit bar with buttons for a quasi-wysiwyg feel, and I've seen in other sites that it handles code fine.

What do you think? Is it worth the switch?

@Nova and Onno, do you think it would be hard to switch?

Re: wiki change?

i dont have problems with our current wiki ( just a formula editor would be nice :D ), but I know that the look might hold some ppl at distance ... if somebody has time to install the new one ... fine with me. dunno about converting the data currently in our wiki ... maybe this could even be done manually, everbody his articles and fine ... not really much there :D

Re: wiki change?

As I already said, I personally would prefer mediawiki engine, also because I daily visit wikipedia. Wikipedia comunity is huge and IMO mediawiki engine is more mature, with obviously better functions and support.

About switching, I do not know how many content do you have here on bot-united wiki, but sooner you switch, less data you would have to convert.
Wiki syntax is somewhat similar between different implementations, so porting data manually should not be very tough. (I do not have personal experience with this admining wiki though)

BTW If you don't know wikipedia, go visit it. It has articles about everyting. From common stuff like glass, actual informations like recent tsunami to highly specific articles for bot coders, like A*, Hash tables ...

Re: wiki change?

The current look of wiki for me is unf***ing usable. When I was trying to find the info about botaim I found it only because I knew - there it should be somewhere. But how did I should know it before - I should 've looking for it in BotCodeSamples if I didn't see it before (maybe I should've looking for it in BotFaq)? I mean we need something better to show some summary list of all articles existing in wiki. There is all mixed - botfaq, after You have some info about email account and other server stuffs and after again You have some info for bot-coding (developerWiki). If I can suggest - try to orgainize it a bit better during switching to the new system. ;)
I mean some start page for users-readers. At the first page currently there is too many links to info how to create new articles or how to use the wiki system - this info should be one level deeper - for articles authors and wiki admins.
I didn't look to this current wiki long time, because after first look at it (after joining BU) I was totally lost in it. :(

Re: wiki change?

there is a start page and you often can go where you want by just clicking, but it doesnt look that structured :D

lol
okay, since aspirin doesn't seem to be against it I'm waiting for either stefan or nova or botmeister's opinion so that we have the majority. Great :)

Re: wiki change?

switching is fine with me ;)

Re: wiki change?

Alright, I'll be doing it tonight. Wiki will be unavailable for a couple hours :)

Re: wiki change?

It looks much better now than before. :)

koraX 03-02-2005 08:52

Re: wiki change?

Well now when we have decent wiki, I think it would be wise to link to it on www-bots-united.com main page. Right under (or above) "enter the forum", there should be "enter the wiki". Small link in upper right corner is not enough :) We need people to visit and contribute to wiki. That's my suggestion :)

Re: wiki change?

omfg this wiki rocks

I'm trying to merge the contents of the old wiki right now...

koraX 03-02-2005 10:38

Re: wiki change?

well I added two somewhat big articles there

http://wiki.bots-united.com/index.ph...ugin_framework

http://wiki.bots-united.com/index.ph...ugin_framework

you can see the power of this new wiki there :)

My feelings so far :
- Inserting images with ease.
- automatic table of content, woo :)
- easy syntax, == for heading, === for subheading, '' for italic and ''' for bold

Re: wiki change?

is the old wiki still accessible somewhere ? or does pmb want to copy stuff first ?

I get this error when I try to log (login page where I can log with my name/password) into wiki. Also default skin seems to be somewhat weird. I hope this is temporary :)

Re: wiki change?

ok asp, math stuff is fixed now. Nova was doing a world build, and we broke quite a few things. I'm now trying to get back the CSS in the wiki.

Re: wiki change?

A bit late seeing this, but I'm all for a switch too. I like the wikipedia format.

Re: wiki change?

We need more wiki contributors!

So far only me and KoraX added new pages. Please drop by as soon as you have 5 minutes! :) The goal is to make it the most comprehensive resource center for HL and Source coders and bot users altogether. We're on a good way already, no ? :)

KWo 08-02-2005 14:18

Re: wiki change?

It's good what You guys do, but last time the trafic here is a bit down - the forum isn't visited so often by the people like before. So - the question is - aren't we a bit too late with this wiki change?

Re: wiki change?

my question again : is there anywhere the old wiki ? would be handy for some joebot+metamod+ whatever pages

BTW wiki is still a bit broken, for example http://wiki.bots-united.com/index.ph...rk-classic.gif

Thanks, aspirin. I was hoping someone would do that.

Re: wiki change?

try again now? Maybe I messed around and I changed some permissions by mistake.

koraX 08-02-2005 22:10

Re: wiki change?

seems to work, thanx

and I added new article about player angles. Feel free to edit it if there are some mistakes :)

Re: wiki change?

nice one about strings :D

although it's abusive to say that C++ strings are faster than C char arrays. They're in no way faster, because C++ allocates/reallocates and frees the memory space itself. It's not because you don't see it doing it that it doesn't ;)

*edit* btw, pages from the old wiki here:
