One last question, which ram is better?

Which kind of ram would be better, a stick of pc3200 with a latency of 3 or a stick of pc2700 with a latency of 2.5? Both are 512mb.

PC3200 without a doubt

1024mb are quite cheap nowadays , get it if you can affort it :)

What the heck does ecc and non ecc mean in ram specs? Do two sticks of ram have to have the same ecc to work with eachother?

I don't know, but it sounds like it's a sort of hardware CRC check. Older RAMs had that. Don't know for the recent ones...

don't worry about the ECC (error checking) you have to have that on the ram only if you have an AMD 64 bit... it checks the data coming in and out to make sure the flow of data isn't currupt or something like that

altho it is nice to have........ if you can afford it i would get the ECC cause that means it is Registered which is better

Oh, ok. It won't work at all with a 64 bit?

Oh and uh, what about unbuffered and whatever its opposite is? What exactly is that? What it does i mean not its opposite. Do 2 sticks have to be the same with that spec to work together?

yes i would STRONGLY suggest that if you have ECC and Buffered ram that you should get the same thing and vis versa

that's nothing to do with old or new ram. in servers for example you want less errors, therefore you might pay some more money and get the ECC ram to reduce errors in the ram. Normally the non ECC ram should be sufficient. should mix both types though.

if you live inside a nuclear plant, on a atomic bombs test place, in chernobyl inside the concrete mantle or in outer space, you should consider using ECC additional to Pb absorbers, because today's DRAM only store some 100 elektrons per bit, so radioactive radiation might do a lot of harm :D

Which is better though, buffered or unbuffered? What exactly does it do?

Re: One last question, which ram is better?

buffered is kinda like ECC it it just another checker... this is only required for AMD 64bit processor... it will work with anything but if you don't have a 64 bit processor and the ECC/Buffered is more exspensive then just get the NON ECC... if the ECC/Buffered is less then get that

Yo, sorry to hijack your topi, Whitman, but I'm gonna put 1024MB of RAM in my computer. I already have 512MB installed (DDR). Which is best, another 512 or to take that one off and put 1 of 1024?

Re: One last question, which ram is better?

isnt that also a money issue

you have to check if your chipset supports dual channel ram. then 2 ram modules of the same type are an advantage, otherwise it's just an issue of slots
