is nosteam illegal
well, a friend of mine doesn't like to buy half life(here in argentina the mayority of the games are copies, and the cd keys are all used) so he asked me to tell him if it's illegal or not, thank

Re: is nosteam illegal
it might now be illegal in Argentina but it's illegal in the U.S.

Re: is nosteam illegal
thanks!

Re: is nosteam illegal
Frankly I don't see any reason why it would be illegal everywhere BUT in Argentina (or in the north pole, in papuasia, in zimbabwe or in barbaria). Of course it is. That nosteam thing can be downloaded for free and allows people to play games they haven't paid for. Explain me how that could have some sort of legitimacy ???

Re: is nosteam illegal
I heard some countries don't care a thing about computers or intellectual property and let people do whatever they want in the virtual world..
|
Re: is nosteam illegal
the problem is that here, you paid for the game, but 100 other people paied for the same game, so you have the game, but if you aren't the first regitring, you lose8o

Re: is nosteam illegal
What's nosteam?
|
Re: is nosteam illegal
nosteam is to download CS 1.6 or/and CS:CZ whithout a steam account, so you don't need a valid cd key, and you don't have to buy an original half life

Re: is nosteam illegal
well theres actually two different kinds of no steam..
one is where they just extracted all the files from the steam cache files and you can run it anywhere.. I think this version is legal.. unless you didn't pay for it.. even then you could've bought it off the black market.. just buy the game from Sierra or Vivendi (I am currently confused about Sierra and Vivendi. Sierra published Half-life 1 and Vivendi is going to publish Half-Life 2?) and it should be legal. You do it this way if you bought the game and just don't want steam running while you play.. http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Nemesis the other version is where they edited some files and made cs1.6 run on the 1.1.1.0 version of half-life engine and I believe this is illegal. this breaks the EULA. |
Re: is nosteam illegal
a friend of mine have a version of CS nosteam that plays a "retail" version of CS 1.6, whitout the half life engine, i thinks that is the first one you talked about sprolygon
seeya |
Re: is nosteam illegal
no.. thats the second one... cs retail is half-life engine v1.1.1.0 if it's upgraded to v1.5 otherwise it would be an older half-life engine.

Re: is nosteam illegal
but he plays half life 1 and CS 1.5 too

Re: is nosteam illegal
but he plays half life 1 and CS 1.5 too
i think i don't understand very well this thing (and i should search for other friends, i belive) sorry for the double post, i't was a internet error. oh! and i will can't read what you read until tomorrow, because i have to sleep, wish me luck, tomorrow i have a geography test seeya |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Theres also steam haters site (i wont post site here itz warez) frankly i think its illegal
|
Re: is nosteam illegal
If Valve had made Steam better then there wouldn't be quite so many people getting "nosteam" copies. If I still played Half-Life then I know I'd get one of those.
|
Re: is nosteam illegal
NoSteam is illegal, illegal against Valve and Sierra.
For example: you've made a game in USA and sell it for $20, but your friend ripped it and sell it for $5 in Russia. Is that legal? And Vivendi bought Sierra Studios and I guess Vivendi will publish Half-Life under SIerra's name, 'couse it's well known ;) |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Ok, i know for a FACT that it is illegal, because we (the steampowered.com staff) have recently been discussing the boundaries of whats illegal. Extracting the gcs files is NOT illegal, whereas SHARING the content within or using it on more than one computer at the same time IS.
NOSTEAM is definately illegal. So is running CS:S and CS:CZ maps on CS server (modified) and so on ... its quite a list. |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Thanks for the clarification Nova :)
I extract the files in the GCF files so steam won't run in the background and also so I don't have to update if I don't like the update :D |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Because few people were banned because of asking and posting exactly about this illegal steam version (they don't read roules and they click only "I'm agree" when they join here), so maybe it's not bad idea to write something like this in php: if the new member will want write his first post, show him the window - "Don't post the warez here (especially illegal non-steam CS version) because You will be banned" (only if he will create a first his post here).
[litle offtopic]I was looking throw other forums and there are also some banned people, but not so often like here and because of the same thing. [/little offtopic] |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Sorry for joining your discussion here with an only related question about legal stuff and possibility:
I have bought two half-life cd keys and I want to play cs on two computers. Is there a way two transfer the downloaded steam stuff to the second one (of course running under a different steam account) without having to download x hundred MB again? And if it's possible, could anyone please explain to me in easy words? And besides the question for possibility, would such a file transfer be considered illegal? |
Re: is nosteam illegal
Well, I don't know about the technical part, but if I'm not much mistaken, legally purchasing two CD-keys means legally acquiring the license to use two copies of HL/CS/whatever. Thus, I can't imagine why such a transfer would be illegal. You wouldn't damage Valve in any way by doing so, so I don't think they would have a reason to complain.
From a technical point of view, it might work if you copy the HL and CS .gcf (cache) files to the other PC and run a "bare" Steam installer from there... the Steam installer ought to find the cache files and d/l only the latest updates and all other files needed... but this is just an educated guess, so better wait for someone who's more competent in that respect... Nova? He's the Steam guy, hehe... :D |
Re: is nosteam illegal
