If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

Hello!

I know this for forum is mostly for HL, but its also for bots, and this is a bot related demo.

I'm working on a bot for RTCW (its in alpha state ATM) and I've put together a demo showing off the progress so far. If you, or a friend, has RTCW - please download the attached demo, put it in your "main/demos" folder, type "demo fritz1" at the console and tell me what you think.

"Fritz Bot" is coming..... :)

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

well, but doesn't RTCW has its 'official' bot ?
AFAIK it's based on Quake3, and it should includes Jan Paul van Waveren's Gladiator bot in the engine.

i don't know Whistler, anyway its good to see someone is trying to make his own bot for another game! RTCW sure is a known game and i bet there are things that can be improved about the bots... ;)

Oops! Thought for sure I had attached it already. For those looking for it, its now attached below.

And no - there was no official bot for RTCW. You may be thinking about the original plans for Enemy Territory (where it would be a retail expansion to RTCW and that IT would include an official bot), but those plans were scrapped by Activision. :(

Fritz has been built from the ground up from scratch - sadly there isn't any bot templates (like HPB) for those in the RTCW community.

Fritz is a capture point bot (capture point is where 2 teams try to control a group of flags scattered across the map).

Ummm, isn't that an ironic question coming from someone who's making a bot based on someone ELSES bot, for a game that DOES have an official bot (CZ is just CS with a new coat of paint)?? o_O

As well as the fact there are nearly 2 dozen different bots out there for CS (half of which are on this forum)! :P

If you're like me, you enjoy making bots and exploring A.I. and its potential, and would probably make a bot for your chosen game no matter what! :)

Even if there were an official bot for RTCW, and dozens of bots for it (like in CS), I'd still make Fritz, because its a lot of fun! :)

And I don't think theres anything wrong with people wanting to make bots, in fact the more the better! I have nearly every bot from this forum, and play them pretty often.

In fact, if it wasn't for the fact I got so hooked on RTCW, CS would be my other choice for making a bot!

You know what I am thinking ?

I am thinking it would be a great idea to have for once a RTCW bot hosted here at Bots United... ;)

What do you all think ?

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

well, but I do have found this in RTCW SDK source code:
Code:

//===========================================================================
//
// Name:        botai.h
// Function:    bot AI
// Programmer:  Mr Elusive (MrElusive@idsoftware.com)
// Last update:  1999-08-18
// Tab Size:    3
//===========================================================================

looks like their official bots is just "disabled" or so... and Jan Paul "MrElusive" van Waveren's AAS seems still in the engine (look at the single player monster AI stuff in the code). So perhaps RTCW bot authors can make use of it.

I don't have RTCW so I don't know about this though...

Hey Pierre - I appreciate the offer, but to be honest I'd like to get a bit farther with Fritz's development before I start thinking about putting a site up or anything. I'm planning on releasing an ALPHA test at the end of this month, if its fairly well received - I may think about putting up a site.

For now, Fritz is purely for my own pleasure. :)

I do like the idea tho - Bots United being a place for all bot authors.......

BTW: below is an .avi demo showing off a bit of the bot's class based workings. In it, I ask Fritz (who is playing LT class), for some ammo. He responds and gives me a few packs of ammo. I shoot him a few times (he gets pissed and says "hold your fire!" and then dies. I spawn in a med, who revives Fritz and gives him a health pack. I do this a couple more times to demostrate how well the bot's can react to their teammates needs (which is something 70% of pub players won't do).

There will be more on the way!

well, if someone can inject some believable AI into the UT bots, I know a few people who would be a lot happier. Especially as Face would become much harder.

Heres another .avi demo showing off two 3 man teams of bots, fighting for a hotly contested courtyard.

You can see that their nav/movement isn't the best, but its pretty good considering how little I've done for it so far.

Whats really funny, is if you watch the chat text, you'll see one of the german bots kill another german, and then say "Sorry". :)

You also see them cap 2 flags (of which there are 6 to fight over). In capture point, whoever can cap all the flags, or whoever has the most when the time runs out - wins.

When you set it so that a player only has limited lives (or even just one), it REALLY becomes a game of skill (Fritz already supports the limited lives setting!).

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

I have seen the 2 avi files (the dem file not, i don't have RTCW installed, i do have it though).

I'd say, this bot has potential! :D i hope you'll become part of BU.

Another .avi demo - this time showing some of the bots basic environment sampling ability.

I created a test map that would be an obstacle course for the bots, it has a hanging wall that must be ducked under, a low wall that must be jumped over, and 3 X shaped wall groups that present places where a bot could get caught or hung up.

And Fritz handles them all no problems. There is NO pathfinding going on in this movie, just basic environmental sampling. :)

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

I have watched it and I was pleasantly surprised.
All this looks very promising, Maleficus. I hope you'll consider joining Bots United very soon, we need you :)

Maleficus 20-06-2004 07:29

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

I'd be very interested in doing that - but: what do I do to join? What are the rules, requirements, perks, etc?

Also, I'd still like to get that first Alpha out (which should be the 30th of this month), and see if theres enough interest, or if I'm even on the right track with the A.I.

Cheers!

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

we have a set of rules here : http://www.bots-united.com/member-rules.html

but as for joining; as far as i know we always has asked someone (so it starts from us) or in very rare occasions some people mentioned other bots... but then again we asked them to join or not. I think we need an IRC conversation to get things arranged, what do you say PMB?

Pierre-Marie Baty 20-06-2004 22:17

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

I disagree, Stefan: at least IvPBot and ShrikeBot have asked us before we ask them, don't you remember ? And the POD-Bot forum was claimed by the bot users themselves (POD-Bot 2.6mm is the first bot which is REALLY an offspring of the Bots United community since it was built directly with the help of the users, who then asked for a forum for it, and finally sPlOrYgOn took it over). What remains is only the 4 bots (HPB_Bot, RealBot, JoeBot and RACC) that initially founded Bots United. In the end it does not matter who makes the first step, actually.

Well, you ask :D Post a request in the Agora with a public poll (yes/no) and as soon as a majority of council members vote 'yes', you are part of Bots United. We will then set up a website for you, a forum, a ftp/CVS/mail account and all the stuff on the basis of what you want or need.

Quote:

What are the rules,
Be present often and moderate your forum yourself if you want one, always be kind and helpful to all the other members, and cooperative with the other bot authors, do not abuse of the services (forum, web space, bandwidth, email accounts) we provide... common sense rules, in fact.

Quote:

requirements,
That you be coding a bot yourself, goes without saying :D I say this because we had lately a lamer with an almost void knowledge of coding, which was unable to do anything but to rip these bots of ours that are open-source, rename it and claim it as his work, and the kid officially asked *us* to join Bots United with his big fake :D It was a very funny moment of the BU story :D
The other requirement would be that you be developing it regularly and planning to release it some day (if you haven't done this yet), OR that your bot be already released and in case you don't want to continue working on it, you engage yourself to come regularly in person to check the forums and provide support for it to the BU members. You don't need to go open-source with it, but if you want to, that would be an interesting plus.

Quote:

perks, etc?
The design of your website will be completely up to you, but if you don't want to bother, Stefan has a nice webby template that both the JoeBot and RealBot sites are using, that you could use for your site too. You can do anything you can think of to generate interest for your bot, and we can hint all newcomers who are looking for a bot to have a look at yours and try it out. After that, it's completely up to you to do whatever you want... We will always be here to help you out whenever you ask, though.

Being part of Bots United will also give you access to our moderators' forum where you can take part in technical discussions about the server, etc. But that's nothing biggy since discussions there are in fact rare, most of our talks are open to public and happen in the Agora. We try to be as democratic as possible.

And if one day you manifest some interest in it, and that one Council member wants to withdraw, you may be able to join the BU Council which settles the general policy of Bots United.

Re: If you have RTCW, check out this demo!

I've read the rules, and I agree with them 100%! I've liked the idea of this place since I found out about it - I've always wanted a place where bot authors could get together and talk shop, or just relax and talk games or whatever, without flaming or trolling. :)

Yes, I made Fritz. Any code that I use thats not mine will ALWAYS be credited to the original author (for example, tho I made fritz from the ground up, a bit of the A Star navigation algorithm was used from another bot that went open source, and was heavily modified for my needs, but will still get 100% credit for what was used). :)

Yes, Fritz will be released. Of course, I can't promise that it will someday be the best A.I. ever made, or that I will work on it forever - but I CAN promise that I have an Alpha release thats going to ship June 30th (give or take a few days). ;) And that my interest in Fritz at this time is VERY strong (heh, I work on him when I should going to work - as evidenced by my post the other day! :P ).

I'm glad to hear theres a template I can use - I like the Realbot/Joebot design - its clean and easy to read. And I'm a programmer, not an artist, so I don't do web pages very well! :D

Now, I'll just have to create some kind of banner GFX. o_O

OK, I'll post the poll as you asked right now. :)

Heyyo,

I tired the official bot, and yeah, it was cut off in its very early stages, so navigation for it sucks, even when you waypoint for it. If you search the net for the console commands you can spawn them. Don't expect them to be much more than moving obstacles. :P

I've yet to try wolfbot, and now, I'm probably gonna reinstall RTCW to give Fritzbot a try. :)

I think RTCW's one of the best looking games from the Q3A engine (released to this date that is). Heh, I'm always booting stuff n' shooting. I think every game needs a boot... lmao, light switch? BOOT! :D

[EDIT]
OHHH! will the bots boot stuff!? lol, now I'm getting carried away, I need to calm down, n' reinstall the game n' boot stuff to satisfy my kicking urges. ;)

Heyyo,

LMAO @PM: Lol, when I was a kid, n' I handed them money, me n' me buds are like "Damn! this is the hottest game of all time man! I'm never gonna play anything else!!!" lol, I used to use my rpg point black when they'd "flash" me. :D

See? boots make games all the more better. Anyone here play Postal 2? that game has a boot, lol, pretty fun to boot people, but not as entertaining/sick and twisted as the "r" button attack, if you've played the game, you'd know what I mean. ;)
