Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

There is an article in the Austin paper today that says:
"Arrests have been made in several countries..."

Thou shalt not steal!
It is a good rule to live by.

Not only does it displease God, it can get you BUSTED!

Yeah, I suspected that already... Valve was distilling infos about imminent arrests.

I just hope they caught the right guys... 9_9

Another reason not to steal is that government does'nt like the competition.

He's complaining about taxes being too high, the government taking money away from him.

Not that stealing is alright...but why couldn't Valve just keep the network safe? :-(. I felt bad when it was stolen, but I must say...it's the first time I've ever heard of a game's source code being stolen.

I bet they have the wrong guys too. They probably just busted some careless fools who were trading the code over the net.

Keep us posted if there's more news.

Hmm no, actually game source code leaks have become a very common thing since the Internet has been popularized. Quite a few number of games have had their sources stolen this way. Notably I believe Descent III and one of the GTA (can't remember which one) were in the lot. Don't take my word for it because I have nothing (but my leaked memory :D) to back this up, but I'm sure a quick search would give you the names of the titles that have been leaked publicly in the past.

Well if they caught those guys then it where not the wrong guys after all.
Maybee they didn't steel it.
But it's guys like that that keep the stolen software market going !!!

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

well, but I don't like the word "theft", I would prefer the phrase "copyright infringement", since Valve haven't "lost" any of the source code, they still have all the source code; it's just copied illegally.

and of course the infringement is wrong and should be punished because it will be unfair to Valve if their work can be copied as anyone wishes, but I don't think it worths a damnation like that.

Very good point.

I doubt these people will ever get a fair trial. Any confessions should be taken with a grain of salt considering how confessions are being extracted these days.

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

if you listen in hl2 communities. and compare to what we says here.. we are on the hackers side..

simply because we are a little open minded then the fourteen yearolds at those communities that just like.. "great let them suffer in jail".. "hope something bad happens in there.." i remember one saying... "when hl2 comes im going to go to jail and show them my copy"

really mature..

Heyyo,

Lmao@ sgt pain :D Yeah, and it's a crime for gas taxes too dude...

And yeah, I read about those arrests. I bet they just got a copy off the net, and got tracked by valve somehow.

And yeah, not only are source code copying going on, but beta versions of games. HL2 beta, Doom 3 Alpha, Far Cry Beta, Painkiller Beta, etc. Yeah, lots of games nowadays are gettin' ripped off before they even hit the shelves, it's just insane eh?

Anyone remember the hackers movie? Well, they made a sequel to it, the aply named "Hackers 2." That got hacked, and copied, and they never released an official version of it. You can still download that movie off the net, but don't expect to see it in a video store...

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

anyone have the eruo trip DVD??? it is so funny they actually put the stolen copy of the movie on there, like the ones where people go into a theater with a camera and video tape it. it is funny cause they say f*ck you Pirater. hehehe
Yeah games get stolen all of the time it's sad

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

Heyyo,

Lol, yeah, euro trip's a good movie, I say it's worth the buy. Once I get some cash, I'll probably get it. :)

Speaking of bootlegged movies, in the philippines, it's like copyright infringement doesn't exist. Black markets everywhere that sell pirated stuff, lol, I saw a music one, right outside of a music store! lol, wow, wonder how the business was at that poor legal place. :P

And at movies? jesus, I had a hard time walking down the isles, damn camera's n' tripods everywhere.... How they do it is they get 1 or so family members to go to the theaters, tape it, and bring it back to show their families. They don't release them, and they tend to tape over the same tape for the next movie, so it's like temporary pirating... heh, too bad we're not alloued to do that eh? 8)

In Canada our govenment is going through a scandal. They stole from the tax payers 250mil. Plus billion that cannot be accounted for. So I guess if that makes me a Lmao so be it.

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

never seen that in the french media... not that I trust them, anyway, but I'd thought it would have made some noise...

You have one URL or two about it ?

Yup. There's an election comming up in a couple of weeks. There are three so-called major parties, and they appear to be either corrupt or just plain scary. I'll be voting "fringe" this time around.

Heyyo,

I know for sure, ndp will get barely any, if any, votes from my town. Our town depends on our logging industry from turnin' into a ghost town. ndp nearly killed us when they caused our logging camps to shut down...

SGt_pAIn 21-06-2004 04:56

Re: Arrests made in HL2 code theft.

Hear ya, current tax rate is around 52%. If NDP where to get in(no chance, but may form with Liberal party if minority) They plan to raise the tax rate even higher. Tax freedom day is the same day as the election June 28. How crazy is that.

Sorry to high jack thread.

Heyyo,

Heh, sgt pain, I think I saw a t-shirt that said that, then again, I think it was a homemade shirt... but oh well, I bet you, if you searched the net you'd find it. They have shirts for everything man... Hmm, must be a good industry to get into, cause everyone needs shirts. heh, I should make that my 5th backup carrer choice. :P

Heyyo,

Lol, awesome, a fellow canuck. :D

DUDE, did you go to the Metallica concert dude!? IT WAS FUCKIN' AWESOME! I rocked soo fuckin' hard to their stuff, it was great. IMHO, I think Metallica's the best long-going rock band. :)

Heh, actually, I diddn't stay for the Godsmack portion of the concert. Metallica rocked me too hard, if I stayed for Godsmack, I'd probably think godsmack would be lame compared to Metallica, and diddn't wanna risk damaging my like for that band. :P

(I'm tryin' to avoid the Canuck chat cause... yeah, I'mma little upset cause someone got penalised for the season, and the playoffs... no more needed to be said.....)
