Steam is a nice concept, and it works for most people (ie, it works for me most of the time) and when it works i like it. I think i can search and find more better servers, i can find the servers where my friends play on, and so on. WON can not compete with that. The other side is that WON is faster, and it has the old fashioned CS 1.5 :)

i eagerly await that reply nova :)

I will request a refund in full.

The only reason I am still here is because of my faithful group of players who are on my 1.5 server day and night.

Was nice working with you guys.
When WON goes down I am history.

P.S.
I have this pearl script call nowon, linux only, that patches CS into thinking it is on the LAN when it isn't so people can connect that are not on the LAN.

The problem is, how is everyone going to find the server without the WON servers?

We were lulled into a trap. This is a mess.
Why don't they just leave the WON servers running?
They want more peole on 1.6 I guss but they are going to loose me and I guess a whole bunch more.

You paid for this game like ... what ... 5 or 6 years ago ?
The fact that we're all still playing HL is a friggin' miracle !
I think that we've all gotten our money's worth outta HL.
Steam isn't really all that bad.
The transition's been pretty painless for me, at least.
I still play WON, but also use Steam, because there aren't very many servers running WON anymore.
Stop kidding yourself by thinking they're gonna lose players due to a switchover.
Steam will thrive once HL2 is out and what's more, they will lose almost ALL of the HL1 players by the end of the first year.
WON is obsolete ... do you insist on joining it ?
Stick around ... HL2 is gonna be just as much fun to play mods on.
:D

I purchased the wise install system about ten years ago for about $300. I have created hundreds of custom Windows install programs and still continue to use the same version from TEN years ago to create more. Check out a custom map installer here:

I certainly "got my money's worth" from this software but why should I stop using it? I know it well, so I don't have to spend a lot of time JUST to get back to my current level of expertise with some new software and why should I pay money for something else when this is doing the job just fine?
My bot server is totally full 24/7 and everyone is having a blast with old CS 1.5 WON and podbot2.5! I play for a few minutes every day and still love it, so does the 20 some ABS members and others who connect.
WHY CHANGE THIS???????????
We have been at it for 2.5 years, and could go probably another year or two more!
Again, I don't want to spend weeks configuring a 1.6 or cz server.
The more important issue for me is this new and extremely dangerous concept of rich software companies having the power to FORCE YOU TO STOP USING SOFTWARE YOU PAID FOR. This is the real issue for me, loosing my freedom.

I just purchased CZ today. Going to install it soon. New bots are supposed to be good.
If they are reasonably ok I will setup a CZ server and I am going to setup a 1.6 server and POD2.6_mm. Real soon.
Can't wait for HL2 either.
So I agree totally with you on this point.
Keep fragging!

From www.steampowered.com:
WON Shutdown Timing

July 15, 2004, 11:56 am · cliffe

Starting July 26th the shutdown of the WON authentication servers will begin. This process will be completed on July 31st. This means players will no longer be able to access Internet features of Valve games, such as Counter-Strike 1.5, using the WON authentication servers. Users can continue using Valve games on the Steam service by downloading the Steam installer and setting up a Steam account. For more information visit www.steampowered.com. Counter-Strike 1.5 players will be upgraded to Counter-Strike 1.6 free of charge through Steam.

Kinda short notice, I think...
