I think the main problem is the .mdl format. Otherwise you can use the darkplaces engine

Re: HL1 source code

The thing about Quake 1 is that it did not have a client or server DLL. It had a scripting language for mods. I don't see that being hard to change, though, because, IIRC, there are files sorted for clients.

Ohh I see I'm the first one to vote with Yes !
anyway even IF Valve doesn't OS HL1 , technically speaking they already did , LOL
I just downloaded the last Sdk...
Now after all the messing and twisting with the HL1 source code , Who can still honestly say HL1 isn't Open source?

by the way , HL2 is on they way Too ! (oops that rhymes)

Awsome :)
Maybe someday a nice OS HL replacement will arise...

Uhm...no ;)
You just got the SDK(a talented programmer as you need no further explenation, but I give it anyway).
The SDK stands for Software Development Kit(tm). Usually software which provide this will let you be able to extend/modify some parts of the software through another API. So for HL you can be a happy modder with the SDK, but the actual engine(which is what we're after at) remains hidden(closed source).

Re: HL1 source code

...and the SDK also has a non-free restrictive license which prohibits using it in commercial purposes and using in non-HL stuff, which means it isn't "open source" either.

also I think there is also a HL mdl viewer from here.

Ahh I'm being mocked by the Boogieman0_o
No NO Rick , You are definitely far more talented than me ! cuz you've been around here since 2003 , and becuz you have made at least 500 posts more than I did till now , You are definitely The Bot King !!!! ......yes yes .......and I'm just a little primitive AI programming one-cell organism :) Mock me PLZ!:)

Now how Stupid must I be to forget , that compiling the HL1 SDK only produces a f***ing mod Dll , instead of the whole Engine ?

How could I forget the fact that Valve earns annually from HL1 sales via Steam tons of Green Cash , even after 8 years from it's release date?

and How could I forget that it's more possible that the NASA admits that it did fake the Moon Landing than that Valve open sources Half-life? ........OK I'm not very sure about the last thing , but you get my point...

Valve will never ever OPen sOurce HL , not because they are greedy programmer dudes like myself but becuz they aren't stupid enough to throw a gold mine out of the window! LOL

but there is still hope ! yes as long as we still have lovely people around here who keep making fun of me and which their hobby is to stay till daybreaks on their computers , while designing the greatest bots ever and who possess the nerves and time to reverse engineer even the Un-reverse engineerable ......................we/You will surely beat the damn source code out of VALVE:clap:'
I'm telling you guys , You are dangerous the whole game industry can't spell your names of fear! Respect Budies.:big_cool:
P.S I hope you have a good sense of humor (no offence dudes), if not then you better take it with a big load of salt!

Re: HL1 source code

*to above post :p*

making it opensource wouldnt destroy half-life, about 10% would take advantage of it that played half-life. the rest would keep playing half-lfie and buying there games.
doom didnt die, quake didnt die, why would half-life die.

Re: HL1 source code

NO it wouldn't die , but it would end up like the music industry...
Who would for example buy CD's if you can get tons of Mp3's from the net??
Money is talking here and everywhere else...
