Ah yes, I'd kind of had one trail of thought, and it appeared to have mutated a little. The original train of thought was: windows is primarily a gui environment, and visual c++ looks to be well designed for that. And that I prefer command line usage (most unix systems have terminals that are far better than those available in windows). Sorry for the confusion!
As a side note - anjuta for gnome (although, I admit it's been a while since I've tried it). |

After a bit of a shakey start, I can honestly say I prefer using VS 2005 over VC6 right now.
