Yup, and I'm not looking forward to withdraw money from my get-me-a-car funding to buy some super-cutting-edge machine...

Personally i've heard nothing good about this OS at all. I mean it just sounds nasty in almost ever possible way. I mean this OpenGL stuff is only one reason why.

but at that time MS will force you to update because if you don't update they don't make money, they can do so by not providing any security updates to old versions, or make their applications only runs on that new version, or stop the "Product Activation" of Windows XP, or so on.

That is true, but unfortunately poor linux driver performance is keeping LOTS of people from making the switch.
I hate everything MS is doing but the fact I get 19fps in HL under linux with good hardware keeps me in windows ( 200+ fps ).
But I will never buy another microsoft product, around here a copy of XP pro costs as much as a motherboard and cpu ( around $250 - $300 ) which is WAY too much for such a crappy product.

Hopefully one day linux will be a good gaming platform, but not that I can see for the next few years atleast.

Last time I checked...hl wasn't even ported to linux. Which means you're running it under wine. Video card drivers have a way to go, for the most part, in linux, but ut2004 runs superb on my comp (under linux), as good as under windows. I'll give doom3 a go one day, if I can find a local mirror of the linux demo.

The Gnu Song

A year ago last thursday, I was strolling in the zoo
When I met a man who thought he knew the lot
He was laying down the law about the habbits of baboons
And the number of quills a porcupine has got
So I asked him "What's that creature's name?" and he answered "That's a helk!"
And I'd have gone on thinking that was true
If the animal in question hadn't put that chap to shame,
And remarked—"I ain't a helk—I'm a gnu!

I'm a gnu—I'm a gnu
The g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo
I'm a gnu—how do you do?
You really oughtta g-know w-who's w-who
I'm a gnu—spelt G - N - U
I'm not a camel or a kangaroo
So let me introduce, I'm neither man nor moose
Oh, g-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!"

I had taken furnished lodgings down at Rustington-on-sea
Whence I travelled on to Aston-under-lyne
On the second night I stayed there I was wakened from a dream
Which I'll tell you all about some other time
Among the hunting trophies on the wall above my bed
Stuffed and mounted was a face I thought I knew
A bison? An oakpi? Could it be a hearty beast?

Then I seem to hear a voice—"I'm a gnu!
I'm a gnu—a-g-nother gnu

I wish I could g-nash my teeth at you
I'm a gnu—how do you do?
You really oughtta g-know w-who's w-who
I'm a gnu—spelt G - N - U
Call me bison or okapi and I'll sue
Nor am I in the least like that dreadful hearty beast
Oh, g-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!
G-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!
G-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!"

I don't remeber that verse, in fact I don't think it is quite the same song as I know. I used to stay with my gran in Rustington. I don't think people actually call it "on-sea". Probably the same place, though. I've never heard of another Rustington and "x-on/by-sea" a popular name format in the area.
