Thats entirely true. I've always found the times in between fighting enemies the scariest. It builds on me, the longer I've gone without shooting something the more edgy I get.

true.. but i think i prefer adrenalin rather then fear..so i go for action games.. about that.. i think im going to install max payne2 again.. play all night.. =).

I think it's mainly satanic elements of games that scare me.

Doom3 yes, was scary at times when you couldn't see the badguys, which's probably why the flashlight's only handheld, and the game was really dark.

Aliens Vs Predator 2 can be scary at times, dunno aboot #1...

Undying, yes, scarey, but not once you get those flaming head skull things, I'd just spawn them n' lmao. :P

as a kid I was in fear of the adventure game called "Darkseed." Lol, I only beat that 3 years ago once I found out it was abandonware n' got it again... now... one of these days I'll get "Darkseed 2" and complete the series that scared the crap outta me as a kid... back on my ol' Macintosh LC 575. :)

The game that scared me out the most when I was a kid was Alone in the Dark (by Infogrames). It's a haunted house with a malefic plot, albeit very subtle.
