I use Avant, it uses the IE rendering engine but has a lot of neat features such as tabbed browsing.

I've never had a spyware or page hijacking problem in the two years I've had this computer. They're not too hard to avoid.

Firefox and Opera are installed though, so I can test the HTML I write in all three engines.

I'm also using firefox because:
1) it's free ("open source") software
2) it doesn't get attacked by viruses
3) it supports tabbed browsing and faster than IE on my old Celeron 466
(may be more...) :)
btw, I don't like opera because not only it's non-free but also it's adware and may contain spyware.

Well, one of these arguments is correct, but not both at the same time.

If it's a non-free version, then you bought it - so it's free of ads and possible spyware.
If it comes with ads (and possible spyware), it's free.

The Opera guys emphasize in their privacy statement that they don't spy you out etc., but I understand your skepticism - and share it, in fact. ;)

Let's say FireFox is the best free browser I know, whereas Opera is my favourite browser.

Thanks for the heads up on Opera guys. I hate spyware, so I'mma stay away from it TY very much. If I wanted a good free, not come packaged with spyware web browser, I think I'd stay with firefox or IE. Opera sounds like it's aboot the same thing, tabbed browsing n' what-not anywho...

/me agrees with wrecks... opera is better! :P

but firefox isn't bad... granted... and ms is just evil... first of all you can't uninstall ie, second, ie doesn't show webpages as they are supposed to be shown, and third, anything microsoftrelated is still opened with ie even though opera is default...

free software means open source...
he didn't mean freeware...

If you have any problems with FireFox you can just learn to code and fix it yourself :D

well the biggest problem of the term "free software" may be its ambiguity, and M$ did said IE is "free software"

but the "open source" also has some problems:
1) the average users don't know what "source" is
2) MOST of the people just mean "source is available" when they are saying "open source"... but that's WRONG; such things like game modding SDKs are NOT "open source" as using parts of their codes in our software is illegal. Also some hackers like to write such license terms like "This software can be only used for non-commercial purposes" for their "open source" software but that is one of the restrictions which made the software non-free or not "open source"
3) plus all the comments which Free Software Foundation has made at:

the Mozilla source code is too huge for me to learn :) but if some hacker (not cracker!) discovered a security hole in it he is likely to report it or publish a fixed version. and for non-free ("closed source" - gotta make this comment to avoid ambiguity) MSIE or Opera only the author is able to do so... so if they don't fix it you'll have to bear with those bugs... in other word, you are *completely* at the mercy of the authors... :)

Yeah, you're right - I mixed up freeware with open source software. I don't know as much as you about all that stuff. Your comment about being completely at the mercy of a program's authors if the source code is not freely accessible also sounds reasonable. I just have the imnpression that in the case of Opera, the authors actually didn't do such a bad job, as Opera is especially popular among people who appreciate "safe surfing". However, another aspect to be taken into consideration is that any kind of malicious code is just more likely to be aimed at a browser that's used by 90% of all people (IE) than at a browser that's used by < 3% (Opera)...9_9
