Heroes of Annihilated Empires

In basic principle, its nothing new. Another game that combines RTS/RPG, but this one so far seems to have fainally done it right. I especially like the part how it lets you use either a hero, build a base/army, or both. I love the idea of combining those two genres, but hate having to babysit both a base an army and micromanage a hero.

They've got a open public beta out, free of course, but then most companies would charge $65 to play their beta.

Edito:

After fininishing it (just one level), I can honestly say its the best RTS I've played in a long time. It combines all the things that I like in an RTS: Massive armies, very little individual micromanagement, an infinite resource model (trees/gold mines etc are unlimited). I never liked having hero chacters before this, but this game implements them quite well since the main army requires little micromanagement.

Even the training buildings can be set to produce units indefinetly, extremely handy.

It runs just a tad choppy, and the pathfinding is bad, but aside from that its a fairly polished beta.

Quote:

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.
most of the data files are also free software (except a few textures) so just download and play, you don't need to have Quake3 to run it :) Unfortunately there are no bots :(
