a .map file is the text based version of your map..
it's only needed if you're editing/making a map..

if he meant .pts, thats the file with the points for leak finding. it would need to be copied to the cstrike/maps folder for proper use of it...in game then, open console and type pointfile
I think he means .prt, which is a file created by the BSP process containing portals for use in VIS, or I think it is.

I mainly use it inside Hammer. No reasons to open up your map in Cs when you can do it in Hammer:) In CS its not coloured either as far as I remember.
