View Full Version : Should a news page be added to BU?

Well, I noticed somewhere that a poll should be made asking if people want to see a big news page where major updates for everything go. (Bots, the site, supported games, the United Bot, etc)
I'm all for it. And my opinion means quite a bit, as I would be the one tasked with the job of making the page. :D
Anyone else care to cast their vote? ;)

Meh, have been saying that for a long time, we need a complete overhaul of this page, and use someting liek vbportal ( i own a copy of that) or subdreamer (subdreamer.com, i own that as well)

Neither of those are what I would want to use, but they both are decent apps. (I used to use vBPortal on a vb2 site)
I was thinking of using VBA CMPS, as that's been the frontpage of choice lately for a lot of sites, it's free, and I have experience with it. (Used it on 2 sites now.)
We'll have to talk in private to decide on what to use, for now let's just see if it'll happen at all. ;)

Well if dstruct says he can make it, then there's no more reason for me to vote no :)

I'm all for it, too - we've been thinking long enough about a news page or a kind of update table for various bots. I think it would be a nice addition if users could directly read all BU-relevant top news on one page. =)
Most of bot users go directly to his favourite bot's forum, so thay don't care what was happened with some other bot. But if this news page will be for the people creating and working for BU community, why not? Another question is this - who will lead this page? If somebody wants do this - once again - why not? ;)

Voted for a unified news page. Makes a lot of sense I think.

I like the idea - but why not a package where any mod/admin can add news?
Newspro is one I know of, for example.
This way, it isn't all up to one person, so if that person were to forget, go on vacation, etc, news would still be fresh every day.

I would add a "News" subforum to each bot's forum, and a "General News" to the main forum list. Anything posted in any of those forums would make it onto the news page, with a maximum of one per forum (except the General News, for obvious reasons)
It would be sorted by newest news, and an icon would be shown based on what forum the news is coming from. I really think it would be helpful, even if I had to spend 30 minutes coding these "extra" features.
So anyone with rights to post in any "News" forum could post news. The 1-post-limit would be just so that one bot doesn't steal the entire news page. ;)

I for it 8)
Yeah would be cool just having one page at the front with all the latest updates.

I for it too then.
Maybe raise the news limit per bots to 2 or ensure it's always the most recent news which will be displayed ?

How about using the same news system as www.csnation.net (http://www.csnation.net) and www.planethalflife.com (http://www.planethalflife.com) ?

Once there IS a United Bot... Of course.
And you're probably right, PMB... 2 "articles" per bot would give more content to the main page.

I already brought this one up a long time ago, but even though people agreed with me nothing came of it.

Yeah, well, the means are there now, and I'm willing to do it.
Just waiting for a nice PM from the Counsil saying "You can install the News page." ;)

oki doki, what about a subdomain news.bots-united.com, which would be framed to www.bots-united.com and the forum main page?
is that reasonable ot just a silly thought ?

Thats reasonable.
Would bot news for non-BU bots be included?

--OKBoth reasonable and a silly thought.
We'll want the main page to be the news page. (In place of the existing index at www.bots-united.com (http://www.bots-united.com/)) :D
A news.b-u.com wouldn't be required.
Thats reasonable.
Would bot news for non-BU bots be included?Nope. Not unless someone posted an article about it in a Newsfeed forum.
