Folks, have we decided on how we might handle a collection of files to download on different subjects? These may be docs, FAQs, utility programs, maps, special versions of the bots, etc.

I think we should have it somewhere perhaps via a web page?

For example, I would like to share this doc with everyone but how to handle it?http://austinbots.com/dl/maps/HowToInstallCSMaps.doc

If anyone wants to review filebase.bots-united.com (which I installed for review by council in the other thread) then we could use that as a download DB. use my admin login Nova / ******** for filebase.bots-united.com/admin.php

Perhaps place a "Files" or "Download" link on the main Bots-United.com webpage below all of the member's names.

On this page, divide it up into sections. "Documents", "Utilities", "Templates", "Tutorials", "Miscellaneous", etc. Then in each section have the filename with a brief description of what it is (or does).

I assume it would have the same skin as the rest of BU and there would be different heading/categories as botman suggested.

I wonder how we are going to do this with the websites of the bots:

1. you refer to the download page section of your bot
2. you have direct-links (which never change, because you can update the files (or do change when you add new files))
3. you do not use the filebase for frequent updating files (like rb wip)

I'd tend to just link at your site to filebase.bots-united.com (if thats ok with you)

and then have different categories for all the bots in the filebase system.

Main Menu

realbot

documentation
tutorials
releases
wip - versions

And so on ...

Finally found some time to review this.

It looks very good. Content and shape. And the distribution of sections as proposed by Nova look fine too. I say go ahead.

Looks good to me too.

i have also taken a better look, it looks sw33t! Perhaps there is also a download counter? (i did not find one, or i was to tired to find one so quickly on my screen?) It would be cool to know how popular files are. You could even have a 'most popular' , 'best rated' etc. Although these sections should be considered first by the council because this also creates a devision in 'good and bad stuff' which is obviously (imo) not the way to go for a united site. I'd say, its up to the users to say what is good/best/popular.

There is a download counter once we have setup the files... we can even define special licenses for EVERY SINGLE FILE ...

this is good, but what about the double classification I was talking about ? players could "sort" the downloads per forum or per author... or according to different criterias...

I'd say get in touch with Nova through PM or ICQ, as he's currently working on it.

Double classification not possible unfortunately (at least not from what i researched)

Nova, I think we may also need these sections:

Documentation / Faqs
Utilities
Misc.

I agree with Austin, documentation is very important. Since this is supposed to be a developers site, there must be a place where programmers can find things like tutorials or design suggestions. It would be good to concentrate all these files in one place and not distribute them in different bot folders, e.g. the Joebot XP Design should be there and not in the Joebot folder IMHO.

@Austin :Can you make a suggesteion for the layout like the one i made up earlier so we can discuss it ?

@all: Also each auther that is hosted here need to tell me what subcategories he needs.

@ PMB: Btw, PMB have you also delete the poxbot mysql databases, the files and the apache virtualserver ? (coz then i can get rid of the domains ...)

what do you guys mean by 'double classification' ?

Nova

tpmb suggested that we should have to categories for each file.

One on a per forum and one on a per-author basis ... thats not possible from what i know about the system i think

for documentation :

- keep bot specific readme's at the bot documentation
- keep bot 'designs and stuff' at a general documentation place.

why?

users rather keep everything at one spot. It is not logical to find a bot download at:
RealBot->Downloads

but the readme at:
Documentation->Realbot readme

...

but it would be logical to have:

RealBot->Downloads
RealBot->Documentation->Readme

and

Documentation->RealBot design.doc

as the realbot design is NOT a nescesary file to play with bots.

Yep, that's what I meant.

Well for documentation, a first stab might be:
Documentation

Installation
(some install doc files might be for, Metamod, maps, scripts, old bots like pod installation, waypoints, possibly Amx and Adminmod since we will get questions on how these are installed with bots.)

Tutorials
(some files might be, the JoeBot docs, PM's navemesh, botman's doc on compiling the client dlls, hacking maps to support more bots per side , )

Faq,
(files on specific topics that are asked again and again, could be different files on any topic. I think this is one of the most important since we can link to these in answering the most asked questions in the forums.)

HL Coding !!
(Da, how about SOME documentation on HL coding?, Metamod coding, General / generic coding needed by all bots?)

CS 1.6 specific documentation
(what ever whenever it is needed.)

Misc.
(always need a misc. section.)

I'd suggest to add another top section: "More Bots". Below that one folder for every bot that does not officially form part of Bots-United, but is still working with the current HL/CS version (Akimbot, Parabot, etc).
For my part, I have been invited to open a Parabot site and forum here, but as I can't offer any support, I don't think it would be a great contribution. However, as the bot still works (and still works fine :-)), I'd like the files to be shared in a place where people will be looking for bots.

Killaruna, you should consider that users can provide support themselves to each other very well... it should not be the reason preventing you from opening a forum here =)
